Ferrari 250 Europa and Europa GT

In 1953 at the Paris Salon, Ferrari unveiled their first attempt in building a series production Grand Touring car. The new model called 250 Europa was offered in two versions of the model: the first 20 units were simply called 250 Europe, while the other 44 were being called 250 GT Europa. The difference between the two version was firstly made by the wheelbase: 2800mm for Europa and 2600mm for Europa GT; and secondly by the engine: first one was using a 3-liter Lampredi V12 engine and the second one a 3-liter Colombo V12 engine.

The GT version was revealed in 1954 at the Paris Salon, initially using the same 250 Europa name, but the GT suffix was soon added, to help differentiate it from its predecessor, and then it became known simply as the 250 GT. The overall shape of the majority of the series was virtually identical to that of the 250 Europa Pininfarina three window coupé that preceded it. In fact, unless you had a keen eye for dimensions, you would need a tape measure to tell them apart, the main difference being in the distance between the front wheel arch and the A-pillar.

Suzuki GSX-R1000 "25th Anniversary Edition"

In 2010, Suzuki will celebrate 25 years of producing the GSX-R series and have created a limited edition GSX-R1000 for the occasion. Called the Suzuki GSX-R1000Z, the anniversary edition will only feature cosmetic differences compared to a standard GSX-R1000 K9 or K10 model (there’s no mechanical difference between the two model years anyway).

Only 1000 such bikes will be made and feature a gold or beige frame, swingarm and parts of the fairing combined with the dominant pearl white color on the fairing. Also, the Gixxer will feature 25th anniversary graphics on the fairing, mufflers, wheel rims and ignition key, as well as a serial number plate.

Suzuki plans to take the wraps off the GSX-R1000Z 25th anniversary edition this week at the NEC Show in Birmingham.

Kids re-create full-scale LEGO BMW X1

The LEGO BMW X1 has now been completed, and while there’s a stark difference from a real X1 – for starters, it doesn’t move – it does look remarkably similar to the real one.

Over 800 children between ages 5 to 13 years old – with the help of some BMW staff – worked on the project over the course of four days. It’s a remarkable feat for these young ones, a lot of whom worked tirelessly to create this 165,000 LEGO blocks masterpiece.

We especially like the BMW badge nestled on the front of the X1, which adds a touch of realism to the finished product. Good work kiddos!

Video: BMW’s ‘hairdo test’ with model Sylvie van der Vaart

It’s an unlikely combination, to say the least.

Then again, BMW has been known to adhere to the mantra of ‘thinking outside the box’ and their latest campaign sure sounds like it came straight out of left field.

For this photo shoot, BMW decided to bring in model Sylvie van der Vaart for a photo shoot to see how her hairdo can stand up to the fierce winds generated by the wind tunnel. We told you the idea was out there.

In this behind the scenes video, van der Vaart – an absolute bombshell, if there was one – begins the shoot behind the wheel of a 1987 3 Series Convertible where – thanks to the powerful wind tunnel – her hair begins flying off everywhere. But later on, van der Vaart props into a 2009 3 Series Convertible and with the same wind blowing in their direction, her hair remains inexplicably intact.

Is it a product of a more powerful hairspray or just the fact that the aerodynamics and air turbulence difference between the ‘87 3-Series and its 2009 counterpart is beyond obvious? Judging from the fact that we know who BMW is, then we’re inclined to believe it’s the latter.

Even van der Vaart was impressed with the striking difference. “What a difference from the older model! I couldn’t feel the wind at all in the new model,” she said. “I even had to check to see if they’d even turned it on.”

Press release after the jump.

Initial thoughts: 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited

We here at Top Speed have received another fun to drive Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited into our test fleet. Last time we had a look at the new Legacy we were driving the flagship 3.6 R model that is more about riding around in relaxed comfort whereas the Azurite Blue Pearl 2.5 GT model is what the Japanese automaker refers to as their sporting Legacy. The biggest difference between the two cars is their power train, while the R was powered by a 3.6 Liter flat six cylinder engine that made 256 HP and 247 lb-ft of torque and is connected to a five speed automatic transmission which of course fed Subaru’s Symmetrical All Wheel Drive System. Our new 2010 Legacy 2.5 GT uses Subaru’s familiar 2.5 Liter turbocharged flat four making 265 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque and is shifted with a six speed manual gearbox, the combination is good for a 0 to 60 MPH time of 5.9 seconds. Despite the smaller displacement and being down two cylinders, the addition of a turbocharger more than makes up for the difference while taking a few pounds off the front axle at the same time.

The fifth generation of the Legacy received a restyling for 2010 and features a bold new design that features a larger one bar grill and a set of Subaru’s new hawk eye headlamps. On the outside, aside from the larger 18 inch wheels, the only thing that gives away the GT as a performance model is the functional hood scoop that feeds fresh air to the Legacy’s top mounted intercooler. The 2.5 GT wears the same bulging fenders as the rest of the lineup as well as their signature side skirts that jut out more than down, giving the Legacy a very wide and stable stance. The 2010 Legacy is a nod at the future of automobile design with its sweptback windshield and short trunk overhang that is more aerodynamic than the traditional three box shape.

Subaru considers their products to be premium automobiles, and it shows on the inside. Our Limited trim Legacy came with a very attractive leather wrapped steering wheel as well as supple seats and a dash adorned with sophisticated wood trim that carries over into the door cards. The 2010 Legacy has been completely redesigned in the interest of a roomier interior and the new car is the most spacious and luxurious Subaru sedan to date. Starting a just under $30,000 our Limited model benefited from a $3,000 power moonroof and navigation system that brought our 2.5 GT’s asking price up to $34,146; not a bad price to pay for so much machine.

Ferrari 412

Revealed in the spring of 1985, the 412 model was the last one in the 400 series and also the final evolution of the Pininfarina designed 2+2 series, that had started with the 365 GT4 2+2 in 1973. The 412 stayed into production until 1989 with 576 units produced.

The difference between the 412 and the 400i which it replaced was made by a higher boot line, along with a deeper front spoiler to improve the car’s aerodynamics. Pininfarina’s other interventions included re-designed sill panels, body-colored bumper inserts, a modified alloy wheel design, clear indicator lenses and black windscreen and window surrounds.

The 412 model designation referred to the swept volume of a single cylinder, thus the V12 engine had been increased in size to 4943cc.
